Guest Speaker- As the speaker was committed to a prior engagement for dinner, President Elect Kaj invited Paul Anning to address the meeting at this time.
Paul began by introducing his fellow travellers, advising that they are travelling the south west of WA on Postie bikes raising funds along the way for the benefit of mental health research and awareness. Funds so far raised $45k. This idea has arisen from his own personal issues with mental instability and a desire to help others overcome their issues in any way possible. Their aim is to get people talking about the problem and solutions, raising community awareness and urging people to be watching for red flags.
Past fundraising efforts include several very successful walks between Albany and Mt Barker along the highway, which is quite challenging. Initial walk raised only 47k but latest efforts raised in excess of $21k. Pie and Dart nights, head shaves etc have assisted their efforts. Mostly been working with Lions Clubs but find many communities very happy to help regardless. Also motivated by his friend’s wife suffering blindness early in life and her needing a cane for physical support. Mostly supporting Vision Australia and Lifeline charities.
A motion from the floor proposed by S Schmedje saw an amount of $1000 pledged by our Club to the cause, by direct deposit into the nominated bank account.
Guest Speaker Thanks – Tom Campbell presented Paul with the customary Club engraved biro, wishing the guys well with the rest of their journey.
